Meet Our Staff


Kelli Hawkins-Derrick (Owner)

Mrs. Kelli began her passion for dancing at the age of 3. She trained with numerous studios in the Hampton Roads area for 17 years including Denise Wall’s Dance Energy and the Governor's School for the Arts. Ms. Kelli was also a long time pageant participant and danced competitively, receiving numerous awards and recognitions. She has had the opportunity to take classes under Mr. Frank Hatchett, Savion Glover, Brian Friedman, Dave Scott, Twitch, Ade Obayami, Kent Boyd, Tyce Diorio and many more. In 1999, at the young age of 19, Ms. Kelli finally made her dreams a reality and opened Kelli’s Dance Explosion. In 15 years, KDX has progressed from 8 to 400+ students. Kelli and her staff pride themselves on knowing and treating all of their students like family. Ms. Kelli completed the Pulse Dance Teacher Workshop in August 2013. She loves spending time with her kids, Cayden, Cameron, and Mia.

Sherry Wynn (Office Manager)

Ms. Sherry is originally from Portsmouth, VA, has a loving husband and three beautiful children. She is the friendly face and voice that greets all visitors and callers to KDX. Ms. Sherry provides phenomenal customer service with a smile and is ready to assist you!

Jami Ferdon (Instructor)

Ms. Jami's love for dance started when she was just 7 years old. She excelled on a competitive level in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, and hip-hop. Ms. Jami began inspiring other young dancers at 15 years of age, and her passion for dance education is evident in her classroom, and on her students’ faces. As one of the original KDX instructors, Ms. Jami enjoys expanding her dance education by attending conventions and conferences, and most recently visiting New York City for The Pulse Dance Teacher Convention.  She enjoys instructing the KDX Rising Star and Performance Team programs and feels blessed to be a part of the KDX family. 

Duane Calles (Hip Hop)

Mr. Duane began dancing Hula at the age of 5 and has not stopped moving since. He has been teaching Hip-Hop in Hampton Roads for the last 15 years and has incorporated all styles of dance to create his routines. Duane enjoys demonstrating diversity and increasing the knowledge and talent base of his students. His choreography was the opening act for Z104's Shaggfest and he has won numerous awards for his unique choreography. Mr Duane is also the director of Art Thru Muvment. A company striving to bring unity to the community! Mr Duane loves spending time with his wife and sons.
